Why Teeth Get Dark?

There are many causes. The most common include genetics, aging, consumption of staining substances (smoking, coffee, tea, colas), tetracycline (antibiotic) staining, excessive fluoride, and old fillings. Whitening toothpaste can remove stain that is on the outside of the teeth. Dentists call this extrinsic staining. However, whitening toothpaste and professional dental cleanings will not change the color or intrinsic staining of the teeth. That is why tooth whitening (sometimes called tooth bleaching) is so popular.

Why is ShineWhite More Effective?

The ShineWhite™ teeth whitening system uses a unique blend of carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide based teeth whitening gel along with an activator. As part of the procedure, the ShineWhite™ system requires the use of a LED light for bleaching. The wavelength of the light emitted from the unit is 430-490 nm and the light is violet in color. The LED light activates the ShineWhite gel, speeding up the bleaching process while enhancing its performance.

The ShineWhite™ system comes with a built-in infrared filter. The filter helps regulate the amount of heat generated at the surface of the teeth by filtering the emissions of the bleaching process. The ShineWhite system is capable of whitening both the upper and lower teeth simultaneously with one, 30 minute visit!

How Does This System Compare to Crest Whitestripes?

Crest White Stripes are a new plastic strip that is coated with Hydrogen Peroxide and placed across the front teeth. The strips do work…sort of. Tests by Crest show that teeth are lightened an average of 1 to 2 shades (compared with 4-6 shades plus for Ultra-White 22%) They also cause the Mr Ed effect. where the front teeth are whitening and the visible premolars are still dark. In short you will see very limited results with this product.

How Long will It Last?

For most people, the treatment is long-lasting. Exposure to coffee, smoking, red wines, and some medicine products will gradually darken teeth again over time. After an initial treatment, most people do touch-ups one day about every 3-6 months.

How long will it take?

It’s quick, safe and easy to do …. Simply apply the ShineWhite™ bleaching gel to the teeth, direct the heated bleaching light to the front of the mouth and press start. After the first 15 minute application, a second application of gel will be reapplied to the teeth and the process is then repeated.

How white will they get?

During the treatment, Carbamide Peroxide is slowly broken down to Hydrogen Peroxide which whitens the teeth. Virtually everyone who whitens their teeth will see improvement. The ultimate whiteness will be determined by the length of time the teeth are exposed to the whitening gel and the mineral composition of the teeth. Average increases in whiteness ranges for 5 to 11 shades in the first visit.

What are the Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening?

PRO - People typically have their teeth whitened to improve their appearance. Whiter teeth are associated with beauty and a healthier lifestyle. When people have a brighter smile, they tend to smile more often and are less self-conscious. Facial expressions are a large part of body language, and, like it or not, people judge you by your smile. An attractive smile can take you a long way.

CON - Although bleaching is extremely effective, there may be short term disadvantages, such as sore gums or teeth from the bleach. This disappears when bleach use is discontinued. Some individuals are more chemically sensitive. If you are one of them, consult your dentist prior to any Tooth Whitening procedure.

Research indicates that bleaching is completely effective in more than 82% of people. In cases of serious teeth discoloration, bleaching may not be the best choice.
